Diggers Down Dawgs

Butte, Mont. – The Lady Diggers held off a late Bulldog charge for a 66-57 Frontier Conference victory Thursday night.

Montana Tech (9-6, 2-0) keeps the winning feeling alive in conference play. The Diggers are 6-1 at home this season winning their third straight game.

Montana Western (8-8, 0-2) stays winless in Frontier Conference action losing their third straight.

The Lady Diggers led by as many as 13 with 6:52 to go in the half. Western worked their way to just a four point deficit at the break.

Western would surpass Tech 38-37 with 12:24 to go on a Sammi Bignell layup. The Bulldogs would hold the lead and stayed up by as many as five with 8:24 to go in the game 46-41.

Montana Tech would stop the Bulldog charge retaking the lead 53-48 on a pair of three-pointers from senior Shaye Murphy and Mandy Machinal with 4:48 to go in the game. Western would fall further behind resting at the final score 66-57.

Montana Tech was strong in the paint outrebounding Western 46-34 in the game.

Laini Kalumbi was one of four Diggers in double figures hitting a double-double in the game. The junior had 14 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and two assists. She went 6 of 9 in the game from the field.

Mandy Machinal had 15 points in the game adding two rebounds and three assists to her night's totals.

Murphy and Brooke Pokorny each had 112 points on the night.

Sammi Bignell led Western with a double-double of her own. She had 15 points and ten rebounds on the night.

Montana Tech is home again Saturday night when they host Westminster at 5:30 p.m.
