Diggers Roll Past MSU-Northern, 58-14

HAVRE, Mont. - The Montana Tech football team piled on 622 yards of total offense to open up the 2015 season with a 58-14 victory over Montana State University-Northern (0-2) Saturday afternoon. Tech's balance attack was led by quarterback Quinn McQueary who went 19-for-21 for 255 yards and two touchdowns in his first game in the Copper and Green. Junior running back Nolan Saraceni had a stellar game rushing for 101 yards on 13 attempts and four scores.

The Digger defense played well with two sacks, nine tackles for loss for 52 yards and a pick. Levi Dawes led the way with a team-high six tackles.

McQueary started off Tech's (1-0) first series going 3-for-3 moving the Diggers into Northern territory. Tech's drive would fall short after a Light player forced a Saraceni fumble. The following series the Diggers would force a turnover of their own as corner DeAngelo Bell stepped in front of the MSUN receiver intercepting Jess Krahn's pass.

Tech would use that momentum in the ensuing possession as McQueary connected with wide receiver Chris Lachance on a 55 yard touchdown.

Saraceni and the red-hit Digger offense continued to pour it on as the running back scored back-to-back touchdowns to give Tech the 20-0 lead after the first.

The Orediggers offense continued to shine as Saraceni scored his third touchdown of the half and McQueary found Clay Cavender in the corner for the score as Tech to the commanding 34-0 lead going into the half.

Northern got on the board thanks to a 20 yard pass from Krahn to Kagen Khamaneh in its first drive of the half. Tech responded with back-to-back long touchdown runs by Saraceni (71 yards) and Zach Winfield (60 yards) giving the Diggers the 48-7 advantage at the end of the half.

Backup QB Dawson Reardon got into the mix in the fourth with a touchdown pass to Cavender.

The Lights scored with two minutes left in the in the game however Tech's lead was too strong as the Diggers went on to the 58-14 victory.

Tech returns home next Saturday Sept.12th when it host rival Carroll College in its home opener at 1:00 p.m.

Notes: McQueary's 90.5 pass completion percentage was just shy of Tech's all-time record (91.6%)....Saraceni eclipsed the 100-yard plateau for just the second time of his career. Saraceni's four touchdowns was more than he had in all of 2014 and 2013 combined...Chuck Morrell is now 4-3 agianst MSU-Northern and is now 3-2 in season openers.
