MISSOULA, Mont.- The Oredigger men finish is second, and the women third at the Montana Open hosted by the University of Montana.
Montana Tech's men posted six wins in stacking up 109 points to finish second overall to the University of Montana. Montana State placed third with 64 points, Carroll finished in fourth, and Rocky rounded out the top five.
The women's program had a great weekend, tallying 47 points, and taking third overall, behind Montana and Montana State. Providence finished in fourth with 44 points, and Carroll fifth with 38.
The women's 4x400m relay team of
MaKenzie Sheils,
Olleca Severson,
Peyton Walker, and
Kamryn Comba, clinched the lone event win for the Orediggers in a time of 4:04.44. Montana Tech placed second in the 4x100m as well.
Individually,
Rylee Armstrong had an incredible day for the Orediggers. The freshman from Lewistown, competing in a full field of 19 competitors, placed second in the long jump with a mark of 5.98m. That destroys the NAIA A standard of 5.78m, and as of Saturday evening is the fourth-longest jump in the country. Teammate
Abby Clark placed 7
th in the event at 5.45m, the next-best finish by a non-D1 athlete.
Also for Montana Tech
Alyssa Jany finished third in the 3000m Steeple, and
Alyssa Plant crossed in third in the 5000m.
The Montana Tech men's relay teams wrapped up wins in both the 4x100 and the 4x400 meter relay.
In the shot put, Sophomore
Jesse Mecham went off. In a 21 man field, Jesse finished in third place with a throw of 16.08m (A new PR) That throw sailed past the NAIA A standard, qualifying him for nationals.Â
Three-time Frontier Conference field athlete of the week, Cade VanVleet scored 18 points for the Diggs over the weekend. With a throw of 47.98m, he won the discus. (.02m shy of the NAIA B standard) He placed third in the hammer throw with a mark of 54.58m, and sixth in shot at 15.30m.
Staying in the field, freshman All-American
Nicolo Lancini placed second in the triple jump at 14.41m, an NAIA B standard jump. Nicolo also placed fourth in the long jump at 6.92m.
On the track,
Adam Schrader won the 400m hurdles in a time of 54.11, less than half a second off the NAIA B standard.
Ian Barville gave the Diggs 10 points in winning the 800m. He crossed in a time of 1:52.98, nearly qualifying for nationals, as the B standard is 1:52.80.
Morgan McClernan took third in the 110m hurdles, with teammate
Adam Schrader taking fourth. In the men's 3000m steeple, Benjamin Zerr placed third which placed six points on the board for Montana Tech.
