HELENA, Mont. -- Abby Clark continued to dominate the heptathlon on Day 2 of the Frontier Conference championship in the track & field multi-event competition, cinching up a fourth-straight title Saturday in Helena.
The Montana Tech women's track & field senior totaled 4,902 points, the second-best score in the NAIA this season, over the seven events at Carroll College's Trudnowski Open. The meet served as the Frontier's championship in the multis — women's heptathlon and men's decathlon.
Oredigger freshman Jacob Dolezal took third in the decathlon.
Clark managed to extend an already-healthy lead over Saturday's final three events. She won both the long jump (5.71 meters) and 800m run (2:32.21) and took third in the javelin (33.42m) to bottle up the win and almost certainly cement a spot in next month's national championship.
It was the second-most points ever scored in the heptathlon at the Frontier championships, trailing only Clark's winning tally from a year ago, 5,009.
As for Dolezal, his decathlon debut went swimmingly. After tying for the win in the 100m dash Friday, the Kalispell native kept momentum Saturday with runner-up finishes in the 110m hurdles (15.48) and pole vault (3.81m) to rack up a program-record 5,779 points. He was just over 100 points out of first place and ranks 27th in the NAIA in the event.
Montana Tech's track & field teams will hit the road again next weekend, heading to Missoula for the Montana Open. The Frontier Conference's 3,000m Steeplechase championships will be decided at the meet.
