HELENA, Mont. -- Montana Tech senior
Abby Clark jumped out to a commanding lead four events into the Frontier Conference heptathlon championship, leading another banner day for the Orediggers' track & field teams Friday at Carroll College's Trudnowski Open.
Clark collected 2,933 points across the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200m dash, winning both field events along the way. She sits 557 points ahead of the field with the long jump, javelin, and 800m run left for Saturday's competition.
Freshman
Jacob Dolezal checked in second in the decathlon, in which the Frontier Conference champion will also be crowned Saturday. The Kalispell product tied for the win in the 100m dash (11.33 seconds) and also completed the shot put, long jump, high jump, and 400m dash. Saturday, he'll complete the decathlon with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1,500m run.
The rest of the events featured sparkling performances from the Orediggers, highlighted by senior
Jenna Jordan's NAIA 'A' standard in the javelin. The Corvallis native threw 43.58m to break her own program record in the event and cement her inclusion in the NAIA national championship meet next month in Indiana.
Montana Tech's men's and women's team combined for nine more event victories on the day, led by a pair from junior
Morgan McClernan and sophomore
Skyler Peterson. McClernan was first to the line in the men's 100m and 400m hurdles, winning in 15.35 and 54.31, respectively. Peterson swept the men's long (6.47m) and triple (13.30m) jumps.
Junior
Cade VanVleet won the men's discus with a 51.15m toss, and freshman
Matthew Moreni won the 100m dash in a program-record 10.72. The Tech men swept the 4x100m (McClernan,
Carter Henke,
Will Wagner, Moreni; 42.09) and 4x400m (
Caden Caywood,
Dom Maricelli,
Drake Schlachter,
Tucker Christiansen; 3:29.25) relays.
The women's 4x100m relay of
Grace Ekness,
Ayla Janzen,
Emma Konen, and
Olleca Severson also topped the leaderboard, finishing the lap in 50.60. Sophomore
MaKenzie Sheils won the 400m dash in 59.62.
Tech's men lead the team scoring with 246 points, nearly 100 points ahead of second-place Carroll. The women are second behind the Saints, trailing the leaders by 18 points with 148.
The Orediggers will return to Virgilante Stadium Saturday to complete the multis.
