HELENA, Mont. -- For the fifth time this season, Montana Tech's
Cade VanVleet won the Erck Hotels/Frontier Conference men's field athlete of the week honor. The league office announced the full slate of weekly awards Tuesday afternoon.
VanVleet collected a pair of NAIA 'A' qualifying standards over the weekend at the Montana Open in Missoula. His 53.02-meter discus throw won the event against largely NCAA Division I competition and topped the NAIA's automatic national-qualifying mark.Â
The junior from Noxon also tossed an 'A' standard in the shot put at 16.78m. That throw put him fifth in the event.Â
Both marks were just off VanVleet's own school records in the event.Â
VanVleet also put up a season-best hammer throw at the meet, hurling 54.20m.Â
He currently ranks fourth in the country in the shot put, seventh in the discus, and 19th in the hammer throw.Â
VanVleet and the Oredigger track & field teams will look to repeat their Frontier Conference championships beginning Thursday with the men's and women's hammer throw in Great Falls. The remainder of the meet will take place at Helena's Vigilante Stadium Sunday and Monday.
