HELENA -- Ava Epler's record-setting throw headlined another successful outing for the Montana Tech women's and men's track & field teams Saturday at Carroll College's Fighting Saints Open.
The freshman took control of the Oredigger women's shot put record with an 11.63-meter heave on her way to a fourth-place finish in the event.
Tech's women piled up seven event wins at the meet, including a trio from freshman
Ayla Janzen. She took top honors in the 100m hurdles (15.38 seconds, second in program history) and long jump (5m, seventh in program history) and teamed with
Cora Pesanti,
Abby Clark, and
Olleca Severson for the win in the 4x100m relay. That quartet won the event handily in 48.84 to move into second on the program's all-time leaderboard.
Pesanti and Clark also notched event wins Saturday. Pesanti took first in the 100m dash (12.87), and Clark topped the list in the high jump (1.56m).
Severson was runner-up in the 400m hurdles, clocking in at 1:06.85, a second shy of her school record. Janzen also ran well in the event, finishing in 1:07.22 to jump to second on the program's all-time list.
The Oredigger women also got event wins from
Peyton Walker and
Jenna Jordan. Walker won the 400m dash in 1:01.44, now the fifth-fastest time in program history. Jordan claimed victory in the javelin with a 39.83m toss.
On the men's side, Montana Tech took another six wins.
The Orediggers got a pair of victories from senior
Caden Caywood, who set the pace in the 100m dash (11.08) and 200m dash (22.04).
The Diggers also got a one-two finish in the javelin from
Colter Ball and
Teagan Wahl. Ball's winning toss of 55.70m missed his school record but topped the event sheet, while Wahl's runner-up throw (53.16m) moved him to second on the Tech all-time leaderboard.
Jeremiah Saari leapt the farthest in the long jump, covering 6.56m on his way to victory as Tech's men swept the top three spots.
Nicolo Lancini and
Drake Schlachter came in second and third, respectively.
Tech's other two wins came in the relays. The Oredigger 4x400m team of Caywood,
Tucker Christiansen,
Gavin Ulland, and
Hayden Hollow took top honors, as did the foursome of Lancini, Caywood, Schlachter, and Ulland in the 4x100m.
The Oredigger track & field teams will hit the road again Thursday, this time for Great Falls and the Providence Open.
