HELENA -- Montana Tech sophomore
Matthew Moreni landed the Erck Hotels/Frontier Conference men's indoor track athlete of the week award for his record-setting efforts over the weekend.
The Helena native broke a pair of his own Oredigger records Saturday at the Spokane Indoor Challenge. He topped the program's 200-meter dash mark with a 21.83-second sprint, placing fifth and breaking the record he set in the event in September by one-tenth of a second. Moreni also took fifth in the 400m, racing the two laps in 49.50 seconds to top December's program record by .23 seconds.
He currently ranks 34th in the NAIA in the 200m and 43rd in the 400m. His 200m time tops the Frontier's season performance list. Moreni also posted the 94th-fastest 60m dash in the country Saturday, clocking in at 6.96 seconds. He became the third Oredigger ever to break the 7-second mark in the event.
Moreni's athlete of the week award is the fourth of his Montana Tech track & field career and his first of the season. He was indoor track athlete of the week once last season and won the honor outdoors twice.
Montana Tech's track & field teams will continue the indoor season this weekend at University of Idaho's Lauren McCluskey Memorial.
