HELENA -- Morgan McClernan became the first-ever Montana Tech men's track & field athlete to reach an NAIA 'B' qualification standard in the 60-meter hurdles over the weekend.
Tuesday, that earned the senior the Erck Hotels/Frontier Conference men's indoor track athlete of the week honor.
The Butte product took part in a pair of Oredigger event wins at the Montana Tech Winter Series No. 2 meet in Bozeman Saturday, most notably with his program record in the high hurdles. McClernan crossed the line first in 8.13 seconds to win and earn a trip to next month's national meet in Gainesville, Fla.
He then partnered with Adam Schrader, Matthew Moreni, and Konnor Gregerson to win the 4x300m relay in 2:18.70.
McClernan's hurdles race ranks 20th in the country as the regular season winds down.
The weekly honor is the first of McClernan's individual collegiate career. He was part of the Orediggers' 4x400m relay team that landed the award last winter. It's the second time this season that Montana Tech has had the award-winner, joining Moreni's honor from January 20.
McClernan and the Orediggers will hit the road for Brookings, S.D. for the inaugural Frontier Conference indoor track & field championships on Saturday and Sunday.
