From Hall of Fame Head Coach Bob Green – “Don Hawkinson was one of the first people whom I met upon being hired to coach the Montana Tech Football Team. From the time that Bob Green arrived in Butte, Hawk was totally on board to back our efforts. Of course his enthusiasm was not just limited to the Digger Gridders. Don was, and is, a regular at ALL home Volleyball and Basketball contests. Additionally, Don has travelled far and wide to watch Tech Football in NAIA National Playoff games and to every Frontier Conference venue in support of Digger competitors. Hawk’s grandsons both were exceptional Football players for Montana Tech. Perhaps most important of all, Don Hawkinson’s relentlessly optimistic and positive attitude toward all things Oredigger constantly distinguish him. Everyone fortunate enough to have had a haircut from Hawk receives not only a professional trim, but an exceptional dose of all the great things going on at Montana Tech. There can be no more deserving candidate for the Hall of Fame in the Contributor category than Don Hawkinson.”
While an all-inclusive list of contributions is difficult to compile for all that Don has done for the Orediggers, here are some of his efforts: organized and administered the DAA Golf Tournament for many years, helped found the Montana Tech Touchdown Club, regular attendee and contributor to the annual Jackpot Trip, renovated and operated Digger Concessions, supporter of the annual Super Bowl Party put on by the DAA and Touchdown Club, consistent contributor to the annual DAA auction by creating outstanding wood work and wine barrel furniture.
