'Diggers Stymie Skylights

HAVRE — Dannii Devenny sank two free throws with 9 seconds left to lift Montana Tech to a 51-50 win over Montana State-Northern Friday night in a Frontier Conference college women's basketball game played in The Armory Gym.

The loss was only the second of the season for the Skylights and came in the final frantic minute.

Northern led the Orediggers 50-49 when Montana Tech head coach Kerie DePell called a timeout with 15 seconds left on the clock.

She drew up a play and the Orediggers tried to set it in motion.

However, a pass sailed out of bounds and Northern had possession on the turnover.

Then, a Skylight player was whistled for a push-off infraction against Devenny while the Orediggers, DePell said, were trying to commit a foul to stop the clock and force Northern to shoot a free throw..

However, as a result of the push-off call, Devenny was awarded the free throws and she calmly netted the pair to give Montana Tech the one-point edge. The Orediggers were 15-for-16 from the charity stripe for the nght.

The Skylights still had nine seconds in which to win the game of send it into overtime.

Laramie Schwenke took the ball for Northern and tried to find a winning shot. Her attempt was just off the mark.

“It was a crazy game,” DePell said. “In the last minute, there were, like, four changes of possesion.

“Neither team led by more than four or five points at any time of the game, I don't think.”

Devenny finished with 18 points and Kelsey DeWit had 16 for the Orediggers. DeWit and Bryn Hasquet grabbed seven rebounds each. Tabitha Tomlinson dished three assists.

Northern leaders included Schwenke with 19 points and Jordan Bruuresma with 15.

“The girls gutted it out,” DePell said. “I'm proud of them.

“This is my seventh year coaching and this is only the second time I've won at Northern. They were 14-1 before tonight. It is a great, great win for us.”

The coach her team employed a fullcourt press on defense the entire way.

“It was a fun game to be part of,” she said. “They were exhausted at the end, but they won it and earned it. “

DePell praised the play of Devenny, DeWit, Tomlinson and Brianne McClafferty.

“Tabby had another good game at the point, controlling the ball,” DePell said. “Brianne McClafferty came in and gave us instant offense with big shots down the stretch.”

The Orediggers will play at Great Falls on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
