SPEARFISH, S.D. — Tyree Haynie only scored four points Thursday night, but the last two were big.
The Tech senior guard netted a jump shot in the waning seconds of the game to hand Montana Tech a 53-51 non-conference men's basketball win over Black Hills State Thursday in Spearfish, S.D.
“Our players made some big plays,” said Oredigger head coach Aaron Woliczko. “But Black Hills was tough and they made plays at the end too.”
Yellow Jacket guard Rob Johnson stole the ball in the final minute and went in for the score to tie the game 51-all with 14 seconds, erasing a five-point lead the Orediggers held seconds before.
Tech took time, and set up the play to Haynie.
“We got Ty one-on-one and he attacked with a running floater with about five seconds left,” Woliczko said. “Then Cole Conway did a great job contesting their last shot.”
Tech freshman Adam Greger led the Orediggers with 21 points, five rebounds and a blocked shot.
“Greger made some great moves and nice jump shots,” Woliczko said. “He had the hot hand for us tonight.”
A.J. Paine also drew high praise from his coach, following a strong defensive effort where he held BHS's leading scorer to eight points. Paine also drained 11 points and collected three steals.
“The place we did the best was contesting shots,” Woliczko said, noting Black Hills' 29 percent shooting performance. “That was the big difference.”
The Orediggers, now 7-3, play their final preseason game Friday night against South Dakota Tech. Tech opens its Frontier Conference schedule on Jan. 6 at home against Westminster.
