SALT LAKE CITY — Westminster rallied for a come-from-behind 70-61 victory over Montana Tech Saturday night in Frontier Conference college men's basketball action in the Behnken Field House.
Jordan Hayter scored 19 points to lead the Griffins. A.J. Reilly scored 15 and Jake Orchard netted 10.
Montana Tech leaders were
Daniel Simon with 18 points,
Tyree Haynie with 17 and
Adam Greger with 11.
The Orediggers led 31-27 at halftime and enjoyed the game's widest spread at 17-7 after a Simon 3-point basket with 13 minutes, 42 seconds left in the first half.
Orchard's 3-point basket with 7:40 left in the game gave the Griffins the lead for good, 52-51. It was one of just four shots he got off against a fierce Montana Tech defense.
Oredigger head coach Aaron Woliczko said the rotation of
Cole Conway, A.J. Paine and
Tanner Neumann on Orchard limited the Westminster All-American's chances to hurt Montana Tech.
Reilly, though, was another matter.
The Griffins had a three-point lead with about a minute to go and gained the ball on a Montana Tech turnover. The Orediggers then had to foul to stop the clock and attempt to take possession on rebounds.
However, the Griffins were red-hot shooters in the second half and cleaned up at the free throw line. From the field, they shot 68 percent in the second half.
“They set a flat on-ball screen at the top of the key, letting A.J. Reilly come off and our guys did a poor job of communicating the screen and he hit 12-footer after 12-footer after 12-footer and ended up hitting 15 points,” Woliczko said.
He said Westminster made its adjustments successfully to take over the lead after halftime.
“They couldn't guard our new offense with their man defense and we got a 10-point lead in the first half,” Woliczko said. “They switched to a match-up zone and did a pretty good job. Then, they went to another zone we hadn't seen before, on film or anything.
“We got tentative and we didn't attack as much as in the first two defense. We didn't find our spots as often.”
The Orediggers will be home next Friday against Great Falls, then will play host to Montana State-Northern the next day in Frontier Conference games.
