Dickinson, ND-- On a night when all seemed lost, Montana Tech stormed back in the final minute to clip the Blue Hawks of Dickinson State 77-74.
Struggles from three point territory hampered Montana Tech in the first half against Dickinson State. The Orediggers missed all eight three point field goal attempts but still managed to keep the halftime deficit in the single digits 33-37.
Dickinson State led by as much as 10 points in the first half while shooting 57 percent from the field.
Montana Tech would chisel away at the Dickinson State lead in the second half tying it up at the 6:54 on an
Antonio Snow free throw. After the free throw by Snow, Dickinson State extended their advantage to seven with 1:43 left to play.
Then the magic happened.
Montana Tech would bring it to 67-72 on a Snow floater, then after a DSU free throw, Snow hit another three pointer to push the score to 70-73 with 45 seconds left.
Adam Greger stole the Dickinson inbound and the Men in Green had a chance to shrink the deficit some more. Senior
Bryan Bock knocked down a deep two point basket from the corner to cut it to a one point game, 72-73.
After Dickinson State called a timeout with the ball at midcourt, Bock made the play of the game. The senior played strong hustle defense and was able to get the ball back in Tech's posession by forcing a jump ball with less than twenty seconds left.
On the next possession,
Brandon Rydberg swished a three pointer from deep in the far corner giving the Diggers a late lead.
The Blue Hawks had a chance to tie it up at the free throw line, but only made one of two to take score to 75-74.
A pair of Rydberg free throws gave Tech the 77-74 advantage and sealed the game for Montana Tech with less than three seconds left.
"We kept getting in our own way for the first thirty-six minutes," remarked O'Herron. "Then we played great team basketball in the final four minutes."
Montana Tech finished the ball game shooting 50 percent from the floor and outrebounded their opponents for the fifth game in a row. The Diggers had a 36-27 advantage on the glass.
Antonio Snow showed what the reigning Frontier Conference Player of the Week plays like scoring 31 points in the contest, while grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out three assists. 20 of Snow's career high 31 points came in the second half.
Also in double figures for the Orediggers were
Bryan Bock and
Brandon Rydberg with 13 and 10 points respectably.
Montana Tech improves to 4-4 in the Frontier Conference and 11-8 overall while Dickinson State falls to 2-6 in conference and 7-13 for the season.
