HENDERSON, Nev. – Montana Tech opened their spring golf season at the Rocky Mountain College Intercollegiate at Reflection Bay Golf Club today. The Oredigger men are in 10
th place after the first day and the women are in sixth place.
"Today's scores show that we haven't played on real grass yet this spring, but I think we got a lot of things figured out today and we are better golfers because of it," said Head Coach
Sean Ryan.
"This is a challenging golf course with lots of water and tight tee shots."
The Tech men shot a team 324 (+36) in the 12-team field. Embry Riddle (Ariz.) is in first place with a 294 (+6) followed by Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), The Master's (Calif.), and Wayland Baptist (Tex.) in a tie for second with a 296 (+8).
The other Frontier Conference schools at the tournament are Rocky Mountain in 6
th with a 306 (+18) and Carroll College in 12
th with a 367 (+79).
Sean Ramsbacher led the Orediggers firing a 75 (+3) in the first round and is in a crowded tie in 17
th. Ramsbacher is just five strokes behind the leader Eric Martin of The Master's who shot a 70 (-2).
"Sean played really solid today and scrambled well to shoot the score he did."
Matt Hobbs is in T34 with a first round 79 (+7).
Jhett Braley shot an 84 (+12);
Isaiah Weldon is in T51 with an 86 (+14); and
Jace Rhodes is in T55 with an 89 (+17).
The Tech women finished with a 376 (+88) in the nine-team field. Embry Riddle leads the women's field with a team score of 326 (+38).
Franchi Ceartin led the Oredigger women shooting an 88 (+16) and is sitting in 22
nd after the first round. Kendall McBean of Embry Riddle leads the women's field, but is playing as an individual. McBean shot an opening 75 (+3).
Samantha Benson and
Cierra Sundheim are T31 after hitting a 95 (+23).
Emily Kelly shot a 98 (+26) and is in T37.
Kennedy Lean shot a 99 (+27) and is in 39
th.
"Our women did a great job battling against such a tough golf course. We should be ready to play it a little better tomorrow and continuously get better every time we go out there."
The final round is tomorrow at Reflection Bay.
