Scouting the #11 Saints
The Saints (11-4, 2-0) have won five straight games including their first two conference outings downing No. 21 Montana Western 72-61 and MSU-Northern 68-49. Senior forward Jamie Pickens leads the Saints and is second in the conference averaging 15.3 points a game while shooting 54.1%. Pickens also leads the team in rebounds averaging 5.6 a game. Kyndall Keller is a deep threat hitting 39.3% of her three pointers while averaging 11.1 points a game. Carroll leads the league in shooting percentage.
Scouting the Argos
The Argos (11-4, 1-1) went 4-1 in December and opened Frontier play with a 66-59 win over MSU-Northern before dropping a close game to Rocky 48-46. While the Argos are shooting the lowest in the Frontier with a 37.7% field goal rate, they are leading the league in rebounds with 44.2 per game. Junior Maddy Dixon leads the Frontier in rebounds with a 8.1 average and puts in 12.2 points per game. Dixon also has 15 blocks on the season. Senior Reed Hazard is averaging 12.1 points per game.
Two in a Row—The Orediggers won their last two games defeating St. Mary's University-Calgary 72-43 and Keyano University 85-56. The games were the first time Tech hasn't faced a ranked opponent or NCAA Division I school since before Thanksgiving. The Orediggers are now 3-1 on Kelvin Sampson Court as they start a three game home stand against Frontier Conference opponents.
Finding the Bucket—The Orediggers were shooting 35.7% from the field in the first seven games of the season averaging 57.6 points a game. But after a slow start, Tech has shot 41.2% in the last five outings and averaged 68.4 points per contest. The Orediggers also faced four ranked opponents in the last month while going 2-4 in the month of December.
Rooney Heats Up—Forward
Tavia Rooney is getting hot in the last five games. After starting the season shooting just 27% from the field, Rooney shot 41.2% in the last five games. Rooney is averaging 15.8 points in that time and grabbing 8.8 rebounds. The junior is fourth in the conference in scoring (13.8 ppg), second in rebounds (7.8 rpg), and leads the league in blocks per game (1.5).
Popping Treys—Tech found their deep shot dropping three-pointers in three of their last five games at over a 40% clip. The Orediggers went 5 for 11 against the No. 21 Bulldogs and followed up with a 12 for 29 performance chasing No. 14 Vanguard at the Cactus Classic. Tech hit 10 of 23 against Keyano last week. The Orediggers are shot 42% from beyond the arc in the three games.
