SHELBY, Mont. – The Frontier Conference golf season opened today at the Marias Valley Golf Course at the MSU-Northern Invitational. The Montana Tech women's golf finished with a 331 (+43) combined score trailing Rocky Mountain who leads the tournament with a 309 (+21).
The Orediggers team score is the fourth lowest in school history in relation to par.
Carroll College is just behind Tech in third with a first round 335 (+47).
"We played a pretty solid first round today, I think as a team we know we could knock a lot of strokes off tomorrow," said head coach
Sean Ryan.
"We had some struggles, but our effort was there today and we grided it out in windy conditions."
Freshman
Emma Woods is on top of the leaderboard after the first round finishing even on the day. Woods set a school record for lowest round with her opening day 72.
"Emma had a bit of a struggle in the middle of the round but bounced back birdying three of her last four holes."
Rocky's Valentina Zuleta trails Woods by two strokes finishing with a 74 (+2). The Battlin' Bears five golfers hold second through sixth place after the first day.
Kennedy Lean is in T10 after shooting an 85 (+13). Kodia Hoagland,
Cierra Sundheim, and
Emily Kelly all shot an 87 (+14) and are in a T12 with five other golfers.
Samantha Benson is in 19
th with an 88 (+16).
The MSU-Northern Invitational concludes tomorrow with the final round at Marias Valley Golf Course.
