LEWISTON, Idaho -- The Montana Tech men's golf team got the spring portion of its schedule started Monday with a strong showing at the Warrior Spring Classic, posting team rounds of 298 and 300 for a 36-hole team score of 12-over-par 598 on its way to a tie for fifth place on Day 1 one of the tournament.
Sophomore
Tyler Avery set the pace for the Orediggers on the par-72, 6,603-yard course at Lewiston Golf & Country Club, scoring rounds of 72 and 75 to check into a tie for 11th at 3-over 147. Avery totaled five birdies, four in his opening round, to help his cause.
Senior
Gabe Witham finished two strokes behind his teammate, shooting 75 and 74 to sit in a tie for 16th. The Billings native birdied three of his first six holes Monday to set the tone.
Sophomore
Joe McGreevey followed at 74-77—151, playing to a tie for 18th in the 43-man field, followed by freshman
Carson Hupka (83-73—156) in 31st, and junior
Joe Opitz (78-84—162) in a tie for 38th. Hupka enjoyed a huge rebound round in the afternoon, improving on his first-round score by 10 strokes. The Polson product highlighted his late round with an eagle on the par-5 18th.
Three Orediggers competed individually, the best of which came from freshman
Landon Olson, who scored at 80-81—161. He'll head into Tuesday's final round in a tie for 35th.
Colin Wade (85-79—164) and
Christian Lund (80-84—164) finished the day tied for 40th.
The Orediggers sit fifth in the eight-team standings two-thirds of their way through the tournament. Tech trails fourth-place North Idaho College by six strokes. Host team Lewis-Clark State leads the tournament at 283-282—565 by 15 strokes over the North Idaho 'B' team.
Montana Tech, playing course golf for the first time in 2025, will conclude the Warrior Spring Invite Tuesday with a 9:30 a.m. MDT shotgun start.
